St. James' Primary School is situated in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales. At St. James' Primary, in 2011, we have 300 pupils in our classes from Kindergarten to Year 6. We have 13 classroom teachers, a technology specialist, a teacher/librarian, a Learning Support Teacher, as well as learning support assistants.



St. James' Primary School has many amenities including a large front oval, soccer fields, cricket pitch, netball and basketball courts, fixed equipment and a multi-purpose assembly hall. We also have a computer lab and a learning centre fully equipped with a library and computers. All computers are networked and online.



We have a firm commitment to creating and fostering a caring, Christian community where parents, staff and students work together in mutual support and respect. It is important for us, therefore, to take seriously our commitment to live as Christians. Our Religious Education Programme and our Liturgical Celebrations help us to focus our life on Christ and what it means to live out our school motto “Living in Christ”. This is very challenging but we must constantly strive to develop Gospel values, which will permeate every aspect of the life of our school – its curriculum, its policy and procedures and the relationships within our school community.

The programme offered at St. James’ is a comprehensive curriculum, which might be defined as the sum total of all experiences, which take place within a school. The formalised curriculum is divided into Key Learning Areas (KLAs) and there is a special place in the daily life of the school for Religious Education.



Stage-Based education and learning within Year Groups are characteristics of the variety of teaching strategies used at St. James’. Kindergarten, Year 1 & Year 2 are year based groups. The students of Years 3 and 4 are also year groups. Years 5 and 6 are grouped together. The students of Years 1 & 2 are referred to as the 'Stage 1 Team', and Years 3 and 4, the 'Stage 2 Team' and Years 5 & 6 the Stage 3 Team. We believe that this Model of Teaching/Learning which we have in place suits our situation and has educational merit.
