The Department is a member of the School of Molecular Sciences in the Faculty of Science, Technology & Engineering.
The Department of Genetics has strong components of teaching and research. We teach Genetics at 1st, 2nd and 3rd year level in a range of Bachelor of Science degrees. We also teach in 2nd and 3rd year Conservation Biology and Ecology courses. We have a range of honours and PhD projects on offer. Major research programs in the Genetics department include: Nematode Functional Genomics, Human Variation, Stem Cell Growth and Differentiation, Molecular Embryology, Molecular Ecology, Molecular Evolution and Phylogenetics and Genomics. This diversity provides students with a broad experience in the application of modern genetics.
$64.1 million has been allocated by the Federal Government’s the Education Investment Fund for the establishment of the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS). The Institute will support, expand and extend the teaching and research work of the School of Molecular Sciences at La Trobe.
