The school was established as a co-educational comprehensive high school in 1967. Students are drawn from a wide area, and many travel to school by train and/or bus. Nevertheless, the school has close ties with its community, and has a reputation for achievement in academic studies, the creative arts and competitive sport. The school has well-established links with nearby Macquarie University, and with nine local business organisations. A longstanding partnership exists with The Whitehouse Institute of Design which has resulted in a unique opportunity for students with the establishment of a Vocational Education & Training (VET) design course to be conducted at the school from 2001.
